Catalogue Note

Warmers of this type, but lacking the cover, include one sold in our London rooms, 31st October 1986, lot 345; another sold in our New York rooms, 3rd June 1979, lot 157; and a third, from the estate of Eugene O. Perkins, sold at Christie’s New York, 30th May 1991, lot 57.

The immediate attractiveness of this piece lies in the bright palette which depicts colourful figural scenes that are delicately framed and juxtaposed against intricately rendered flower scrolls. Wares such as the present piece were produced by skilled Guangzhou artists who were trained by Jesuit missionaries who introduced the technique of enamelling on metal to China.
