Description

  • Virgin of the Immaculate Conception

  • South German, mid-18th century

Condition

Overall the condition is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is stable splitting to the wood consistent with the material, including through the globe and to the upper back where there is also a large knot. There are one or two small inserts, including to the globe. There is a loss to the front of the snake's head and possible small losses to the Virgin's proper left toes. The sculpture is carved in sections and stable joints are visible (mostly in some of the flourishes of drapery). The hands are separately carved and the proper right hand is possibly reattached. There may be some minor restorations to some of the joints and splits. There are patches of dark discolouration, in particular to the top of the head at the back and to the drapery at the bottom to the back. There are a few holes filled with wax to the back.

Boxwood carvings with the Virgin Immaculata were very popular in South Germany in the 18th century, see, for example, the mid-18th century fruitwood group sold in these rooms on 2 December 1969, lot 128.
