Condition

Overall the condition of the ivory is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age and handling. There is restoration to the feet and base. There are glue residues to the surface throughout, especially to the front. There are surface abrasions to the back on the proper right side and to the front, especially the chest. There is a small loss to the proper left foot and drapery at the back (bottom). The eyes may have been inlaid originally. There is minor splitting to the ivory consistent with material.

Catalogue Note

This little shield bearing figure, presumably a pawn from a chess set, with mop haircut, tunic and bulging eyes, recalls those carved on gaming counters of the 12th century. The eyes of this figure were originally inlaid with jet or possibly mica beads, which are now missing.
