Description

  • St. John the Evangelist and the Virgin from a Crucifixion group
  • gilt and polychromed wood, on blue velvet covered bases
  • Spanish, probably Castile, 16th century
both numbered: 1097 on the reverse

Condition

The overall condition is good with wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is wear to the polychromy throughout; areas of polychromy may be refreshed. The virgin's hands are re-attached at the wrist and there are restorations to St John's proper left wrist. There are losses to St John's feet and to his base. There is non-active worming to both figures in particular to the base of the virgin at the front. There are a few losses to the drapery of both figures. There is splitting to the wood consistent with the material in particular to the chests. There is a large hole between St John's feet. There may be losses to the backs of the figures. There is wear and dirt to the velvet base.
