Catalogue Note
Carpeaux's Tête de la Vierge is the only one of his works that was edited by the foundry of Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard. Hébrard generally focussed on works with a modernist touch, such as the sketches of Degas and Dalou and the great animals of Rembrandt Bugatti. It is therefore not surprising that he acquired this particular model by Carpeaux as well. It is a study for his seminal carving of the Virgin in the church of Notre-Dame of Saint-Cordon, in which the Virgin's face, veil and hair is reduced to a couple of broad passages of modelling without losing Carpeaux's sense of expression and movement.
