Description
- Diptych with the Virgin and Child with Saint Catherine and Saint John the Baptist and the Crucifixion
- ivory, in an ebony frame
- French, 14th Century
Condition
Overall the condition of the ivory is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is splitting to the ivory consistent with material, including two large splits running vertically (1) near the centre of the left leaf and (2) to the left side of the right leaf (this latter split is likely to be a fracture). There is a replaced section of ivory to the right leaf to the left of Christ's legs (this does not entirely cover all of the losses). There are a few small losses, including one to the top moulded edge of the left leaf. There are a few small drill holes to both leafs. There are lacunae to the inside edges of the leaves for the original hinges (now lost); the top two lacunae have later ivory inserts. There are a few further minor scratches and abrasions. There are remnants of original polychromy. The ebony frame is in good condition, with minor splitting and wear consistent with age. There is a loss to the top right corner on the outside of the left frame. There are paint residues to the hinges.

Catalogue Note
Pocket-sized ivory diptychs, conveniently hinged to close flat, were produced in large numbers in the 14th century to satisfy the popular demand for portable devotional imagery. The scenes of the Glorification of the Virgin, holding the Christ Child, and the Virgin and St. John sorrowful at the foot of the cross, were frequently paired to juxtapose two great Christian mysteries: Christ's Incarnation and the Passion. The attendants in each of the panels tend to vary, possibly according to the wishes of the patron. See for example a diptych with a similar figure of St. John the Baptist but St. Christopher in stead of St. Catherine at the side of the Virgin and Child and only the Virgin and St. John the Evangelist flanking the Crucifixion from the Dormeuil Collection, sold Sotheby's Paris, 19 November 2007, as lot 19. Another sold in these rooms on 10 December 1992, lot 34, does have St. Catherine but Mary Magdalen in stead of St. John.
