Catalogue Note
This very finely carved marble bust of Napoleon is the work of Raimondo Trentanove, a successful Italian sculptor who was trained by Lorenzo Bartolini (1770-1850) in Carrara and went on to work in the studio of the greatest Neoclassical sculptor, Antonio Canova (1757-1822) in Rome. It is interesting to note that Trentanove worked for a number of English patrons, including William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858). There is another version of the present model, dated 1824, in the United Service Club, London (Roscoe, op. cit., p. 1281).
