Description

  • Embriachi Workshop Italian, Venice, 15th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the box is good with minor dirt and wear consistent with age. There is minor splitting to the ivory and wood consistent with the material. There are a number of small losses, including some of the wood panels on the front and back edges of the lid. One of the small ivory panels on the back side of the box is lost and one of the wood squares on the chess board is lost. Some of the panels may be reattached. A few of the wood panels have warped, including the one below the lock plate. There are a few further small losses, chips and abrasions throughout. The hinges may be replaced and there would once have been little metal mounts on each of the long sides of the box (the holes for these are now filled in). The paper lining to the interior is slightly unstable in areas. The lock is lost.
