Description

  • Adelsteen Normann
  • A Norwegian Fjord (possibly the Sognefjord)
  • signed A Normann lower left
  • oil on canvas
  • 106 by 160cm., 41¾ by 63in.

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There is a fine pattern of craquelure, notably in the thick white pigments, and the old varnish is somewhat more yellowed than the illustration suggests. Under ultraviolet light the old varnish fluoresces opaquely, however there are no clearly visible retouchings. This painting is in good original condition, and its appearance could be enhanced with a surface clean. Held in a decorative gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

This panoramic view, possibly depicting the Sognefjord in Norway, illustrates a location also beloved by Hans Frederik Gude and Adolph Tidemand. Known as the 'Switzerland of the North', Norway began to establish an individual identity for itself following the acquisition of its own constitution in 1814. German-trained artists including Normann were critical to this process, exploring a new way of experiencing nature and Norway in all its awe-inspiring beauty.

Born in 1848 in Vågøya in Norway, Normann studied at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf from 1869 to 1872, where Gude was professor from 1864-80. From 1883, he was based in Berlin. It was following Normann’s invitation to exhibit his work there that Edvard Munch came to Berlin at the end of 1892, whereafter a close friendship developed between the two artists.
