Private Collection, Athens
Condition
The canvas has been relined. There is a pattern of fine scattered craquelure visible primarily in the sky and some minor signs of abrasion, notably a small, light intermittent line in the sea below the central boat (visible in the catalogue illustration). Under ultraviolet light the old varnish fluoresces quite opaquely, making the surface difficult to read, however there appears to be evidence of restoration notably in the upper-left quadrant of the sky, small repairs in the blue flag of the ship, along the lower framing edge, and in the dark rocks near the right framing edge in the centre. Some of the retouches have discoloured with age and the varnish has yellowed somewhat overall.
Held in a decorative gold-painted frame with a nameplate.
