Catalogue Note

Searle was taken prisoner by the Japanese during 1942 and incarcerated in Changi jail. Despite the harsh regime, Searle contributed set designs and programmes to numerous shows mounted by the prisoners. He also appears to have made birthday cards: the example here includes the verse “A birthday in Gaol | Produces no mail, | No postman to knock at the door, | As a guest of the Nips, | There’ll be no fishanchips | But Good wishes from us | by the Score!” A preview invitation card is addressed from “Ronald Searle of Lilliput and George Sprod of Smiths Weekly”. Four examples of cartoons by Sprod are included in this lot.
