Catalogue Note

This pack of cards commemorates the events of the reign of Queen Anne up to 1706, in particular the victories of John Churchill, first duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), in which England and her allies were fighting the French and the Austrians. The court cards include members of European royalty, including Eugene of Savoy, the prince of Denmark, Charles III of Spain as well as Queen Anne. The anti-French element includes a whole suit of cards satirising Louis XIV, including the portrayal of Madame de Maintenon as a turkey seller.
