Catalogue Note

Born in 1976, Kang Haitao remains to teach in Mianyang city ever since graduating from Sichuan Fine Art Institute in 2000. His night-scape works particularly bear a sentimental touch, where meticulous treatment of light and darkness ably envelopes the viewer with feelings of quietness and peacefulness. Old Factory from 2008 illustrates rays of light beaming through the pitch black roof of an old factory. Kang’s highly regarded capture of night is further exemplified in the work, with the light taking on a spiritual presence against the dark backdrop. “I think if there is light in the visual, perhaps there is also a sense of life.” Indeed, through this, the artist has successfully utilised a Western medium in finding a parallel plane with Chinese traditional ink artist’s continual pursuit on artistic concept.
