Catalogue Note

Nasrollah Afjei sought inspiration from the world surrounding him. Different aspects of nature are filtered through his work. The enigmatic power of nature such as the earth and sea, the curve of the landscape and the freedom of the wind are all captured in his perspective driven works that form dynamic horizons, elegant waves and mountains with the illustration of words. Afjei believes calligraphy is a universal language which can be appreciated by all audiences, much like the colour field artists of the 1960s and 1970s who stripped back landscapes into fields of various hues creating minimalist works which appealed to primal emotions rather than drawing on recognition and association. Afjei utilises the word, like an engineer; the angles in his scripts are precisely thought out to create a complex myriad of various shapes. He is an artist who constantly challenges the preconceived boundaries of calligraphy through trial and experimentation.
