Catalogue Note
Tte French inspired design of the present tables, clearly reflecting the influence of Percier and Fontaine, is characteristic of the work of S. Jamar, a London based cabinet-maker whose furniture approximates more closely than that of any other at this period to the pure Empire style. Jamr worked from premises in Wardour Street and later Gerrard Street, Soho, and is last recorded in 1826. In advertisements of the period he claimed to produce furniture ` equal to any made in Paris, and at a rate that upon calculation will be admitted condiderably advantageous than inplrting from abroad'.
