Description

  • wool flatweave
  • Approximately 257cm. high, 305cm. wide; 8ft. 5in., 10ft.
lacking border, with later narrow banded yellow and blue selvedge

Condition

Colours not as yellow in tone. More green than blue in hue. Crisper and more defined in appearance. Lined with almond coloured cotton (not evenly aligned). Hessian strip across the top with sleeve for a pole. Some vertical stitches from attachment of the lining are visible, on close inspection on the front of the tapestry. It is recommended that Velcro is attached across the top for hanging purposes in the future. The outer selvedge is later. There are some minor areas of repair. The browns have oxidised in areas, and have been repaired, to the outlines of the figures and drapery in areas. The hair, beard and moustache of the standing figure with the wreath, has been repaired and is a pale terracotta colour. The red in the medallion of the shield and in small highlight areas is later repair (for example to clothing, and edge of shoulder of young standing figure). Overall good and stable condition, with balanced colours and composition. Fine drawing and weaving with some charming details.
