Condition

Our drawing is in overall good condition. It is simply to note that the paper is slightly warped and that the margin of the lower left corner is very lightly browned. A drop crashed on paper in the lower third of the right margin and slightly dark paper on 2 centimeters diameter. The reading of the work remains intact. Red chalk still have its beautiful shades.

Cette saisissante feuille d’études réalisée par Carlo Maratta est hautement caractéristique de son travail de préparation à la sanguine. L’artiste composait en surchargeant sa feuille et affinait son sujet de manière empirique : chaque étude est réalisée d’après l’autre, juxtaposée, corrigée et approfondie. D'autres exemples de cette pratique peuvent être vus au Metropolitan Museum de New York, avec Quatre études pour Galatée (Inv. 25.62.43v) ; au British Museum de Londres, avec Têtes de quatre putti (Inv. 1872,1012.3295) et Etude pour une nymphe (Inv. 1874,0808.42); à la National Gallery de Washington, avec Etudes pour saint Jacques Majeur (Inv. 2007.111.123) ; ou encore au Département des Arts Graphiques du Louvre (Inv. 3375; 3376; 3385; 3418).
