Catalogue Note

After completing his training at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin, Leech attended the Académie Julian in Paris, shortly after which he travelled to Concarneau in 1903 - a popular destination among the student artists and following in the tradition of Walter Osborne and John Lavery. Leech's canvases from this period onwards show the influences of his training, applying an Impressionist technique of free brushwork and bold colours, exemplified in the present work.  A lively fishing town, painting fishing boats was a favourite subject-matter for Leech and his fellow artists working in Concarneau.
