Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. There is a stretcher bar mark down the centre and to the right side. There is scattered areas of fine shrinkage and craquelure. There is a small repaired hole to the upper left of the sky. ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT The surface is covered with an uneven varnish. There is some corresponding retouching to the hole, small minor touches in the trees and to the centre stretcher mark, and to the right horizontal one. FRAME In a gilt plaster frame.

The hay-rick and copse of trees on the left of the present picture also appears in Summer Landscape of 1858 (illustrated in Jan Reynolds, The Williams Family of Artists, 1975, plate 115), Both pictures appear to have been exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1859.
