Catalogue Note
Tabarin was the street name assumed by the most famous of the Parisian street charlatans, Anthoine Girard (c. 1584 – 1633), who amused his audiences in the Place Dauphine by farcical dialogue with his brother Philippe (as Mondor). The two made a fortune by the sale of quack medicines for several years after 1618. They retired ca. 1628 and lived the remainder of their lives as country gentlemen near Orléans. Many farces and dialogues were credited to Tabarin and pieces claiming to be his works began to appear in 1622.
This is a pirated reprint, done at the Hague, of the Rouen: Geuffroy, 1627 edition and like that edition, without the Rencontres of Gratelard announced on the title. This present edition is the first appearance of the second part of the Farces Tabarinques. The last part with its own title page, not mentioned on the first title, is Les avantures et amours du capitaine Rodomont. Les rares beautez d'Isabelle et les inventions folastres de Tabarin faites depuis son retour de Paris jusques à son retour.
