gouache heightened with gold on paper, laid down on an album page flecked with gold, inner borders of gold scrolling flowers, the reverse with calligraphy in thuluth and naskh scripts signed by Almas

Condition

In good overall condition, very minor losses to album page, ink strong and bold to reverse calligraphy, minor creasing, as viewed.

Catalogue Note

Calligraphy on verso signed as: mashshaqahu al-'abd almas

'Written by the servant (of God) Almas'

Two other works by Almas are recorded, neither dated: a calligraphic page attributed to the second half of the sixteenth century in a private collection in Tehran and another in the Salar Jung Museum and Library in Hyderabad. (Mehdi Bayani, ahval va asar-e khosh-nevisna, vol.IV, Tehran, 1358 sh., p.39 & M.Ashraf, A Catalogue of the Arabic Manuscripts in the Salar Jung Museum & Library, II, The Glorious Qur'an, Its parts and Fragments, Hyderabad, 1962, p.34, no.211).

It bears the seal impression of a certain Haji Muhammad Masih Karbala'i dated 1212 AH/1797-8 AD.
