- Approximately 103 by 92cm; 3ft. 4in., 3ft.
Condition
Even 2-3mm pile overall. Very minor losses to area of pile in yellow ground between birds along the lower edge, and to the red ground in the top left and right corners (possibly old crease wear). There is a repaired rectangular section to the upper right edge of the border (approximately 15cm. long, 3cm. wide), and stitches of inset visible. There is also a similar repair to the lower right corner, again with stitches of repair visible on the front (cut threads visible on reverse). Repairs as irregular lines radiating at angles from the base of the niche in the centre of the top border. The niche central rectangular section with evidence of inset as stitches visible. Between the radiating lines (barely noticeable without close inspection) there is a small area of red of different colour (not obvious from reverse if repiling). Original black and red side cords. Original fringes at both ends, some loose sections. Incredibly soft wool. Rich glowing colour and flexible handle. Charming piece, llovely example.

Catalogue Note
This charming horse cover is distinguished by the free-form pattern of brightly coloured miniature boteh which dance across the field, counterpointing the structured repeat pattern of pecking chickens accompanied by little dogs found in the spandrels. The chicken or ‘murgi’ design is a traditional Khamseh pattern, for example see pl. 14, Black & Loveless, Woven Gardens: Nomad and Village Rugs of the Fars Province of South Persia, David Black Oriental Carpets, London, 1979, pl.14.
