Catalogue Note

The firm of James Shoolbred and Co. was established circa 1870, later expanding to become one of the first great department stores in London on the Tottenham Court Road. Shortly afterwards they branched out into the furniture trade as cabinet makers. The firm was renowned for the quality of its wares and was issued with a Royal warrant in the mid 1880s.The form of the present lot is typical of other stick stands also attributed to Shoolbred suggesting that they were also the maker of the present lot. The brass label for Samuel Cutter probably relates to them as the retailer rather than the maker.
