Catalogue Note
The form of the present library chairs is developed from the `curricle', the Roman magiistate or consul`s seat which featured under this name in Thomas Sheraton`s The Cabinet Dictionary, published in 1803. Gillows adopted this terminology and produced bergere chairs using this description. The present chairs are similar to this form and are of a quality consistent with Gillows` output. The turning and form of the leg is typical of Gillows and can be seen on many examples known to have been produced by the firm strongly suggesting that the present examples, although unstamped, were also produced by the firm. For comparison see Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, 2008, 2 vols, Vol. I, pp. 215, 221 and 223. For further comparison, a similar pair of library chairs sold Sotheby`s London, An Exceptional Eye, A British Collection, 14th July 2010, lot 107, sold £17,500 incl. premium.
