Catalogue Note

The inscription reads: 'SHANGHAI RACES, AUTUMN MEETING 1875. ''The Bankers Cup'' Presented by the Bankers of Shanghai. Won by ''RAVENSHOE'' The property of John R. Bromley & Septimus Daly. Ridden by J.E. Waller.'

Septimus Daly (1839?-1914), who was born in Brighton, Sussex, appears to have moved in the mid 1860s to Shanghai  where in 1884 he married Jane du Moulin Fearon (1860-1912). About 1887 the couple settled in Sydney, Australia. By 1890 he was on the committee of the newly formed Stock Exchange of New South Wales, of which he remained a member until his death.
