Catalogue Note

The Hon. Henry Edmund Butler was born on 18 December 1844, the only son and heir of Henry Edmund Butler, 13th Viscount Mountgarrett (1816-1900) by Frances Penelope, daughter of Thomas Rawson. He was educated at Eton and at Christ Church, Oxford, and succeeded to the title upon the death of his father on 26 August 1900. He was married twice, first in 1868 to Mary Eleanor (d. 1900), sixth and youngest daughter of St. John Chiverton Charlton of Apley Castle, Shropshire; and second in 1902 to Robinia Marion, daughter of Edward Hanning Hanning-Lee of Brighton Manor, Hampshire. Lord Mountgarrett died on 2 October 1912 at Nidd Hall, which property, formerly in the Rawson family, his father had inherited in 1891.
