Description

  • silver, ivory
  • 30.5cm., 12in. high
circular, each with ovolo borders and engraved with a coat of arms, motto, supporters, duke's coronet and crest, ivory handles, the triform lampstands with ring pendants and detachable burner covers

Condition

Each clearly hallmarked on the base, kettle and hinged cover, the bases and burners are engraved with a crest and ducal coronet, each burner is leaning slightly (easily straightened), the arms on the bodies are rather worn, light surface scratches commensurate with age, the undersides of the kettles are slightly blackened from the burner flames - this could be removed from cleaning, otherwise overall good condition and rare to have a pair.

Catalogue Note

The arms are those of Pelham-Clinton, Dukes of Newcastle-under-Lyne, probably for Henry Pelham-Clinton, 4th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne (1785-1851), who succeeded to the title upon the death of his father in 1795.
