the campana-shaped body richly applied with cast rococo scrolls and vines, engraved on one side with an inscription, the detachable cover simialrly decorated below a foliate finial, in original wood case with printed paper label: 'R., J. & S. GARRARD. Goldsmiths and Jewellers. TO THE KING & Royal Family. PANTON STREET, HAYMARKET, LONDON.'

Condition

marks and condition good apart from a few minor dents on one side of the cup, gilding a very good rich colour; the case is a little damaged, the printed paper label is damaged

Catalogue Note

The inscription reads: ‘Holderness Hunt Races 1830. THE HONR. A. MACDONALD. WM. CONSTABLE MAXWELL ESQR. GEORGE THOMPSON ESQR. Stewards.’
The Yorkshire Holderness Hunt Races of 1830 took place on Thursday, 15 April that year. According to the present owner, in whose family the cup has descended, the winner was a Mr Bower. Of the races run that day, the Swelter Cup, ‘by Subscription of 10 sovs each, for horses carrying 14st. each,’ was won by Robert Bower Junior’s horse, Laurestinus, by Sir Tatton Sykes’s Juniper, son of Whiskey (The York Herald, and General Advertiser, York, Saturday, 17 April 1830, p. 3e, and Saturday, 4 December 1830, p. 4d; and The Morning Post, London, Monday, 19 April 1830, p. 3e).
