A pair of French gilt-bronze-mounted Samson pot-pourri vases and covers late 19th/early 20th century

Description

  • porcelain and gilt-bronze
  • each 31cm high;1ft. 1/2in.
each cover with a coral and shell finial above a pierced band cast with c-scrolls and flowerheads, with scrolled foliate cast handles on a scrolled and acanthus leaf cast base, the whole applied with leaves and branches on a pink honeycomb ground 

Condition

In overall good condition. The colours are slightly darker overall and more attractive than in the catalogue photograph.The gilt-bronze is nicely cast although a little dirty and would benefit from a light clean according to taste. On one cover there is a loss to a green branch and a very minor section chipped off. On the bowl there are losses to some of the branches and a leaf is chipped off. There are similar losses to the other bowl but these can easily be restored.

Lunsingh Scheurleer, Chinesisches und japanishes Porzellan in europäischen Fassungen, Braunschweig, 1980, p. 267, Abb. 186, for the original model of famille rose Chinese porcelain pot pourri vases and covers with gilt-bronze mounts, circa 1740-50, now in the Wallace Collection, London, upon which this pair are based.
