Catalogue Note

"De sa main droite levée qui désigne le ciel et de sa main gauche qui indique la terre et l'horizon, le niombo déclare aux morts : "'je suis un médiateur, un intermédiaire. Je me déplace d'un monde à l'autre'" (Farris Thompson in Dapper, 2002, p. 70).
Rare réplique "miniature" du mannequin contenant les ossements du défunt, cette ancienne effigie niombo honorait un individu jugé exceptionnel par la communauté, susceptible de devenir un grand médiateur entre les deux mondes. A l'expressionnisme du visage répond la qualité du décor pictural, dont chaque signe trouve son interprétation dans la pensée Kongo (spirale de la délivrance du savoir, etc.).
