Catalogue Note
Dans le Nagaland, la façade de la Maison des hommes (morung) était ornée d'un ensemble de panneaux sculptés qui avaient pour thème récurrent, comme ici, la tête stylisée du buffle mithun. "Ces façades majestueuses rappelaient à la communauté la grandeur des Fêtes du Mérite et le pouvoir des familles qui les avaient célébrées" (Somare et Vigorelli, 1992, p. 24).
La réalisation de ces panneaux sacrés - depuis le choix de l'arbre centenaire kelo jusqu'à leur élévation sur la façade - faisait l'objet de rituels collectifs, visant à la cohésion des membres du clan et au renforcement du pouvoir politique et militaire de la communauté. Si le Pitt Rivers Museum (Oxford, inv. n° 1934.82.236) et le British Museum (inv. n° AS 1944.03.62) en possèdent quelques rares autres exemples, aucun ne témoigne de la virtuosité et de l'ancienneté atteintes ici.
