Condition
Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Considerable traces of wear to the bottom rim of the panel as visible in the catalogue illustration. Polychrome decoration of the lower figure slightly restored.

Catalogue Note
Erigé au centre de la maison familiale et transmis de père en fils, le panneau tumuk revêt chez les Yami une très haute signification, fondée sur son iconographie. Les personnages ornant la base représentent le héros ancestral Magamaog, qui enseigna aux Yami l’art de la construction et la pratique de l'agriculture. Sa bienveillance et ses pouvoirs protecteurs sont ici sollicités afin de contrer les nuisances des mauvais esprits anito (Cameron et Sumnik-Dekovich in Feldman (1985, p. 171-174). Si la figuration frontale des personnages et la forme pleine des visages rappellent l'art des Païwan, l'élégance des motifs en spirales s'apparente à l'art des îles Batan (nord des Philippines), aux populations apparentées.
