Condition
Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Fine old dark patina with traces of wear on the two tips.

Catalogue Note
Provenant de Houaïlou (centre de la Grande Terre), ce couteau à igname se distingue par la superbe élaboration de sa forme et la finesse de sa sculpture. Voir Sarasin (2009, pl. 10, n°10) pour un couteau à igname très apparenté, conservé au Museum für Völkerkunde de Bâle; et Kasarhérou et Boulay (2013, p. 289, n°193) pour un autre, plus schématique - collecté en 1930 par le pasteur Philippe Rey-Lescure et actuellement présenté dans l'exposition Kanak, l'art est une parole, au musée du quai Branly (inv. n°71.1932.55.49).
