Catalogue Note
Associant des traits humains et zoomorphes, le masque nwenka - exclusivement réservé aux forgerons - est, avec le molo, le plus ancien et le plus important masque sacré des Bobo. Intervenant dans les cultes Kwele et Dwo, il évoque "l'esprit de l'animal qui a sauvé l'ancêtre fondateur du clan [...] et incarne, sous une forme allégorique, Dwo, fils du créateur Wuro (Roy, 1987, p. 329). A la géométrie caractéristique du long visage parcouru par une puissante crête à pointes triangulaires, s'ajoute ici la rare présence d'un personnage rapporté, s'imposant au centre de la composition.
