Condition
Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Open cracks at the rear of the figure, on the base, on the proper left buttock and on the neck and proper left side of the head. A small loss on the proper right side of the belly. Fine dark patina.

Catalogue Note
Cette miniature traduit remarquablement le style de la région centrale du pays Sénufo (cf. Golwater, 1964, n°114 pour le couple de statues deble du Metropolitan Museum of Art). Utilisées par les devins de la société féminine du Sandogo, les statuettes madeö étaient considérées comme le support des relations entre les individus et les esprits. Leur petite dimension s'adapte à l'espace volontairement réduit, intime, dans lequel elles reçoivent les patients (Glaze, 1981, p. 57). Ici, la saisissante dynamique des formes est mise en valeur par les nuances de la patine sombre, profonde.
