La beauté épurée de ce très ancien masque-portrait ndoma le rattache à la région Nord-Ouest, probablement en pays Warebo, cœur historique du royaume Baulé. Selon Susan Vogel (1997, p. 35-36), c'est dans cette région, et plus précisément chez le groupe proto-Baulé Mamla, que l’on trouve l’origine des danses de divertissement Gabgba au cours desquelles apparaissent ces masques, considérés par les sculpteurs Baulé comme le « sommet de leur art » (idem).

Condition
Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Deep erosion with losses to the rim at the rear of the mask. Some chips and old cracks elsewhere. A small hole and losses on the median part of the head-dress. A loss of material on the nose as visible in the catalogue illustration. Fine dark patina.
