Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Layered encrusted patina with dark and beige tones. One open crack to the chest and another one to the proper right side of the torso. Loss to the feet as visible in the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note

Les sculptures dont l'esthétique tend vers l'épure géométrique sont extrêmement rares dans la statuaire Baulé. Avec un talent remarquable, l'artiste a  traduit les notions d'équilibre et d'intériorité - critères essentiels de la beauté en pays Baulé - dans la tension conjuguée des galbes et des lignes géométriques. La prégnance du visage aux traits minimalistes est accentuée par la fine patine croûteuse, identifiant l'œuvre à la personnification, sous des traits idéalisés, d'un  "génie de la forêt", asiè usu.
