Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. One open stable crack on the proper left side of the base. Another filled crack on the proper left side at the top of the pestle and an old loss on the opposite side.

Catalogue Note

La base originellement enveloppée dans un sachet en peau, les pilons de divination lubuko - rares - étaient utilisés par le devin, dans la région occidentale du pays Luba, pour broyer le kaolin et entrer en communication avec les esprits (Neyt, 1993, p. 48). Voir Homberger (1999, p. 288, n°92) pour un pilon de style comparable, conservé au Mead Art Museum (Amherst College, inv. n° 1999. 26).
