Catalogue Note

Ce pendentif en laiton était l'apanage de l'oba (roi) de Benin. Puisant son origine dans l'iconographie régalienne des royaumes Yoruba d'Ifé et d'Owo (XIe-XVe siècles), l'image du bélier, à Benin, "fait partie des symboles dynastiques qui furent remis en honneur au XVIIIe siècle. Lorsque l'oba portait la tête de bélier comme pendentif, elle était suspendue du côté droit de sa robe" (Blackmun in Plankensteiner, 2008, p. 365). Les ornements de hanche figurant un bélier sont rares. Voir Sotheby's (New York, 25 mai 1999, n°190) pour un pendentif comparable, également auréolé de motifs s'achevant par la représentation stylisée de poissons silures, et agrémenté de clochettes.
