Catalogue Note
After the war, Chagall settled in Vence, in the South of France. Over the years, his palette became more colourful, the Mediterranean landscape took hold of his canvases and his painting moved towards a bright, luminous serenity, a hymn to life that reaches its zenith in Les Amoureux de Drammont. A work of incandescent beauty, this composition, dominated by an intense blue, is magnified by a wonderful setting sun. The solar disc of rich red, outlined with white, yellow and green imposes itself here in all its splendour, admirably rendered by the painter’s vibrant touch. The pair of entwined lovers in the foreground could be a depiction of the artist and Valentine Brodsky who had just made their union official in July 1952.
