Gouache heightened with gold on paper, buff-coloured border with nasta'liq inscription identifying the artist Kanha in the lower margin, the reverse with a large panel of text in nasta'liq script

Condition

In overall good condtion, colours on central painting strong, some rubbing to top of painting (in skyline), the rest of the page with very few worm holes, particularly to bottom, minor section to top and left-hand edge with discoloration, minor smudging to one part of text on reverse, as viewed.

This leaf comes from a now dispersed copy of the Razm-nama dated 1598-99. Other portions of this manuscript are in the British Library (Or.12076), the Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Two more pages from this manuscript by Kanha are in the Prince of Wales Museum, Mumbai (26.4705; Seyller, 'Model and Copy: The Illustration of Three Razmnama Manuscripts', Appendix A, no.117), and in the British Library (Or.12076, fol.83V; Seyller, op.cit, Appendix A, no.145.
