Catalogue Note

The nagari inscription on the reverse identifies the Ragamala as Hindol Raga, which Dallapiccola informs us is related to the spring (Glynn, Skelton and Dallapiccola 2011, p.19). The individual ragamala here is not identified, but many illustrations employ the composition of a female listening to music. Indeed, Ebeling mentions that the "combination of a female figure and a musical instrument is by far the most widely used iconographic formula in all of Ragamala Painting" (Ebeling 1973, p.251, no.255 (73)).

Another leaf from the same ragamala series was sold in these rooms, 2 July 1984, lot 162.
