Description

  • A Marble Figure of Zeus

  • Height 23 in. 58.4 cm.
inspired by a Greek original of the 5th Century B.C., the god standing on a profiled base with the weight on his left leg and formerly holding a staff in his missing raised left hand, and wearing sandals and himation falling from the left shoulder, the eagle standing on a thunderbolt at his feet, the head (not belonging) with full beard and long hair bound in a diadem; the nose, neck, small areas of the drapery, as well as the head and top of the eagle's left wing restored in marble; the arms of the god and his scepter probably also once restored in marble; on a late 19th Century gray-veined white marble base.
