probably from a sarcophagus lid, carved in high relief with a winged erote walking to right and carrying a deer on a staff on his left shoulder, his companion missing, the legs of an animal visible before him.

Provenance

reputedly Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901), the Swiss symbolist painter, Zurich and San Domenico near Florence
Professor Benedict Maedlin, Basel, acquired prior to 1960

Condition

As shown and described, head and neck of deer broken off as shown, surface weathered and worn, discolored particularly on the left side from what appears to be iron oxidation and also blackened on top of the pole and elsewhere as shown, possibly from exposure to fire, scattered chips and abrasions, vertical stress crack running from the chest of the deer, over the top of the relief for approximately 3 inches, and another across the pole above the wing of the erote.
