  • Height of head 3 3/4 in. 9.5 cm.; Relief fragment 5 1/2 by 7 3/4 in. 14 by 19.7 cm.
Aphrodite with her head turned to her right, her long wavy hair parted in the center, tied in a chignon, a long plait gathered in her left hand cascading down to the right side of her neck, the relief fragment carved with a gesturing paniscos, a fragmentary reclining figure holding a staff, and the remains of a young satyr carrying a lagobolon.

Lucille Kaye (1920-2012), New York and Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, probably acquired in the 1970s or earlier

Condition

Both as shown, surfaces weathered. Tip of nose of Aphrodite missing and small fresh chips to base of neck, remains of bonding material on the bottom of the neck and hair, and wrist. The relief fragment mounted askew on a worn brown velvet covered base, the relief with with scattered chips and abrasions, particularly around edges, chips where staff was formerly engaged to background.
