  • A Marble Head of Herakles, Roman Imperial

  • Height 9 1/2 in. 24.1 cm.
perhaps a portrait of Emperor Commodus, turned to his right, with thick unruly hair and beard, long moustache, large eyes with indented pupils, and prominent brow, his head surmounted by the head of his lion skin.

Condition

As shown, nose lacking, surface cleaned, including the face but with some of the original polish still present, root marks and incrustation in crevices and interstices, scattered chips and abrasions, particularly large chips to proper right side of lion’s head below its ear and to proper left side of lion’s upper jaw, remaining portion of jaw repaired.
