Condition
Simon Parkes' Condition Report (9/25/13):
This painting is in very good condition. It is still stretched on its original stretcher. The canvas has an old glue lining, which is well stabilizing the paint layer. The painting has been cleaned, perhaps not quite fully. The work is certainly not damaged as a result of cleaning, and all of the glazes and technique applied by the artist are very much in good condition.
There are a couple of restorations in the large wave in the center of the left side. Despite the fact that the work reads very strongly under ultraviolet light, there is no evidence of any other retouches in the remainder of the picture. The sky in the upper left may have received a slightly opaque glaze in a couple of areas that might not be original, but this is not visible under ultraviolet light or strongly visible to the naked eye. One can see that some of the cracks and texture of the paint is slightly obscured here. If this is a non-original glaze, it is probably unnecessary but is not an indication of a condition problem.
The work is in very good condition and will respond to light cleaning and accurate retouching.
