Catalogue Note
This side cabinet was meant to be placed in a prominent room. Interestingly, it is constructed like a piece of architecture with pediments and marble tops framing a picture, here rendered with finely cut fruitwood marquetry.
The contrasting colors of the marquetry stem from the use of handcut sections of exotic woods and fruitwood against a much darker panel. This type of cabinet was typically placed in a living room as prominent, exhibiting the owner's taste and fortune. Pairs of candelabra or three piece clock garnitures were often placed on the marble top.
