Catalogue Note

Aimé de Martelaere studied his craft at the Institut Supérieur d’Anvers in Belgium and studied under the guidance of sculptors Geo Verbanck, Jozef Cantré and Ernest Wijnants.

He worked in plaster, bronze and stone, and was known for his stylised figures that sometimes even moved towards forms of geometric abstraction. He was commissioned to carve reliefs and statues for public monuments such as the Musée de la Sécurité and for the Société de Logement in Brussels.

The present marble represents a bathing nymph, and is a departure from his more stylised figures. It demonstrates a particular 19th century and Classical harmony of form.
