Condition
The canvas has been relined. Ultraviolet light reveals some strokes of retouching in the sky, notably strokes in a 'T' shape circa 4 by 7cm to the left, and some further scattered spots; ultraviolet light does not appear to reveal any notable retouching in the rest of the composition. The overall appearance of the painting is good and it is ready to hang.
Held in a decorative frame with a cloth-covered inner slip.

Armand Guillaumin was a leading French Impressionist painter and lithographer. Born in Paris in a working class family, Guillaumin took evening drawing lessons while working in municipal jobs. He worked as a civil servant for the French railways before enrolling to study painting at the Académie Suisse in 1861. There, he met Paul Cézanne and Camille Pissarro with whom he maintained lifelong friendships. Cézanne attempted his first etchings based on Guillaumin paintings of barges on the Seine. Guillaumin exhibited at the Salon des Refusés in 1863, before participating in six of the eight Impressionist exhibitions: 1874, 1877, 1880, 1881, 1882 and 1886.
In 1886 Guillaumin became a friend of Vincent van Gogh whose brother, the art dealer Theo van Gogh, sold a number of his works. He was finally able to quit his government job and concentrate on painting full-time in 1891, when he won 100,000 francs in the state lottery. Noted for their intense colours, Guillamin's paintings are represented in major museums around the world. He is best remembered for his views of Paris, the Creuse département, and the area around Les Adrets-de-l’Estérel in Provence.
